When planning a trip to India, it is important to ask your travel counselor a few key questions to ensure a smooth and enjoyable experience. Firstly, inquire about the best time to visit India, taking into consideration weather conditions and any major festivals or events. Additionally, ask about the recommended duration of the trip and the must-visit destinations in the country. Lastly, don’t forget to ask about any necessary travel documents or vaccinations required for entry into India.
Slow travel; absorb India rather than have it rush buy
As a travel planner, I suggest spending 5 to 7 full days in one place, preferably Jaipur, at a homestay. This will provide lots of opportunities to interact with Indian natives, take day trips in the surrounding area, explore textiles, and decide on the things to carry.
Prefer 2 or more nights in a place with day trips
4 to 6 weeks total depending on budget
Private car and English speaking driver throughout
Train only for day trips
No travel at night
Interests
Experience India rather than “do” a bunch of sights; meet Indian people
Culture especially religion and political life (him); domestic life, textiles and cooking (her)
Textiles and other crafts Work shop
Classical Indian music and dance
Wildlife safaris or national parks
Must do
World-class guides; at least one per city
Purchase custom-made Indian style clothing early in trip (kurta like Judy Dench wears in Marigold Hotel)
See Taj Mahal
See Himalaya Mountains
Visit textile workshops
Visit Hindu temples, Mughal mosques, Buddhist temples
Experience rural life
Visit one or two places of significance in Ghandi’s life
Shop for quality textiles (her) while he visits a military or religous site
Hotels
Ensure you have travel insurance for a safe, clean, mid-range or better accommodation with a private Western style bathroom. The room should be on the ground or first floor where there is no elevator, averaging about 7,000 – 8,000 Rs per night over the whole trip.
Heritage, haveli, homestay!!
Occasional splurge if budget permits
Good neighborhoods where it is safe to walk in larger towns and cities
As a travel agent, I find the most appealing accommodations are B-19 and the Manor (Delhi), Chandra Niwas (Udaipur), Jas villas (Jaipur). All are very highly rated on Trip Advisor.
